CLAST Competencies:

This course reinforces the arithmetic CLAST competencies and teaches some of the algebra CLAST competencies.  You will learn (or review) mathematics skills including arithmetic skills, geometry and measurement skills, algebra skills, reading skills including literal and critical comprehension skills, and English language skills.

Valencia Core competencies: TVCA

Valencia faculty has defined four interrelated competencies (Value, Think, Communicate and Act) that prepare students to succeed in the world community.  These competencies are complex abilities that are essential to lifelong success. This course will help you develop and demonstrate the abilities to (1) think clearly, critically, and creatively; (2) communicate with others verbally and in written form; (3) make reasoned value judgments and responsible commitments; and (4) act purposefully, reflectively, and responsibly.  Due to the nature of these global competencies many problems and activities will be presented in the context of an application.  These applications will require students to select appropriate information from the problem and communicate effectively how to arrive at an appropriate solution.

Attendance:

Attendance will be taken every day. Regular attendance and class participation are significant factors that promote success in this course. Students are expected to attend every class and  be punctual   Students are responsible for all class materials and any announcement made in class whether or not you are present.  Students with  3 unexcused absences will be withdrawn from the class. Please let me know if you have to be absent.

Tardiness:

All classes start at the time indicated on your class schedule. Being late to class or leaving early is a disruption and is discourteous to the students and your professor. Students to persist on being tardy or leaving early will be dealt with on an individual basis. Please let me know if you have to be late or leave early.

Class Participation:

Students are encouraged to participate actively and ask pertinent questions during class. Courtesy will be observed at all times.

Homework:

Completion of homework is crucial to the student’s success in this course. Homework problems must be worked in a dedicated notebook neatly and in order.  To be successful in the class it is important  to spend considerable amount of time working the homework assignment before attending the next class period. Failure to do so will result in you falling behind.  It is suggested that you discuss ideas and homework with other students. Worked-out solutions for each problem must be shown, not just the final answer.

Evaluation:

There will be 3 in class tests and a comprehensive final. All tests are comprehensive with emphasis of the most recently completed material.  There will be  quizzes.  Quizzes can be 'regular' quizzes or 'copy from notebook' quizzes from previous completed material.

Test problems are similar to homework problems, examples on the book and/or examples worked in class. Each tests will count as one (1) grade each, quizzes will count as one(1) grade and the the comprehensive Final will count as one (1) grade. There will be a total of 5 grades. Your grade will be the average of 5 grades.

Test problems are similar to homework problems and examples in the book. Grades will be based on 60-69, 70-79, 80-89, 90-100 being D, C, B and A respectively. Students that stop coming to class without withdrawing or do not take the final exam will receive a grade of "WF.  Students that withdraw after withdrawal deadline will receive a WP or WF based upon the student’s average at the last day of attendance. A withdraw-passing grade “WP” will be assigned to students who withdraw after the withdrawal deadline and have a grade of at least 60%.  A withdraw-failing ”WF” grade will be assigned to students who withdraw after the withdrawal date and have a grade less than 60%. Students can not withdraw a course during Final Exams Week.

Make-ups:

NO make-up tests will be given. In case of a medical emergency or legal situation, the final exam grade will replace the missed exam once documentation is received and approved by the instructor. If the absence is not justified, the final exam grade will replace the missed exam with a 20% penalty. Only one test can be replaced per academic term.

Academic Honesty:

All students are expected to be in complete compliance with Valencia Community College’s policies on Student Conduct 6Hx28-10-03 and Academic Honesty 6Hx28-10-16. In no instance will cheating of any type be tolerated in this course. I reserve the right to determine the appropriate penalties within the aforementioned policies.

Classroom Behavior:

Valencia Community College is dedicated to promoting honorable personal and social conduct. By enrolling at Valencia, a student assumes the responsibility for knowing and abiding by the rules articulated in the Student Code of Conduct (6Hx28:10-03). The instructor reserves the right to refer students who engage in activities that are disruptive to the learning environment to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action. The following list, though not exhaustive, includes things which are disruptive to the learning environment:
Use of any electronic devices including but not restricted to: Cell phones, iPods, and laptop computers (documentation from OSD will be taken into consideration).

Preparing homework for other courses during class.

Engaging in private conversations with classmates while class is in session.
