"How I picked up a Palm and couldn't put it down!"

This page is for Palm Pilot users and lovers(or users of other handheld brands) and dedicated to my nursing students who will probably be using these remarkable little reference tools on a daily basis in the not-too-distant future, where they will probably become as indispensable as stethoscopes in routine patient care situations.

I first decided to get a Palm and use it for clinicals on the basis of discovering marvelous free software that it was possible to download from the internet--such as the Drug Database on epocrates.com. More and more software is being created and offered to health care practitioners to use in their handhelds in their everyday practice as readily available reference material in a light, easy-to-use, pocket-sized package. It is truly technology for the 21st. century, and can help prevent errors in practice and save us from those bulging lab coat pockets, where we used to carry lots of dog-eared manuals that quickly became obsolete. Now we can be on the"cutting edge" with fully updated information literally at our "stylus tips"!

On this page, I'd like to share helpful web sites I've discovered that provide both software and articles related to this new technology. I happen to have a Palm 515 which is in the middle cost range for Palms and meets my needs very well with its 16Megs of memory! You can add an expansion card for another 16!! The beauty of programs for the handhelds is that there are many wonderful ones that take up a small amount of memory for the large amount of information that they provide. On my Palm, for example, I have two 3000+ drug databases that can be updated every month from the internet, a Medical Calculator, a lab reference book, a medical reference manual, and many other helpful reference documents.

So, students, this is a great gift to request for graduation. It is not hard to learn or use, and its ability to "talk" to your computer keeps all your information backed up and safe. It uses either 2 AAA batteries which last for over six weeks with moderate to high usage, or comes with a rechargeable battery system, and it will double as a phone book, appointment calendar and memo list. That's why I say, you too might become a Palm addict! Once you pick it up, it's hard to put down or be without! Now, enough said--on to the list of web sites!!
