Dance Aerobics
PEM 1171
Mini Syllabus
Mary Sue Gausz

This is a brief version of the syllabus for this course. When the semester begins students will receive a more complete detailed syllabus the first class meeting.

Description

This is a fun and educational class that introduces the students to a variety of aerobic conditioning programs.  No previous dance or exercise experience is required. I welcome all students no matter what age, shape, or fitness background.  We work using hi/low impact classes, step aerobics, slide aerobics, kickboxing, jump roping, Pilates, stability balls, hand weights, tubing, flexibility, and mat work.   I teach to the beginner but if students have more expertise I give them optional challenging combinations.  I encourage students to work at their own level and ability.

Objectives
The focus of this course is to develop positive exercise habits that will help student make changes in their level of fitness by participating in a structured fitness class twice a week.

Lectures will provide clarification of fitness standards and nutritional guidelines.

Both the workouts and lectures will help students understand what changes the individual has to make to become fit and healthy.

Labs will help students assess their personal fitness and help them create individual fitness goals.

Course Content
The class format is divided into three sections.  The aerobic section consists of a warm-up, activity, and cool down.  This section is approximately 30 minutes.  The second section is the toning section at which point we work on strengthening selected muscle groups.  The final section is the relaxation and stretching.  This is a 50-minute class (summer semester times are different) that can build stamina and endurance depending on individual student effort.

There are three to four scheduled lecture days, which cover topics and labs chosen by the class.  On the days we have lecture there is no workout.

Grading:
70%  - Attendance, must participate and complete required workout.
20% - Labs and required paperwork
10% - Final Exam

90 – 100 = A
80 – 89 = B
70 – 79 = C
60 – 69 = D
Below 59  F

Attendance Policy
Students are expected to be in class every day.  There are no “excused” absences. I do realize illness, family or job priorities may cause a student to miss class therefore if a student is absent I do allow up to four absences to be made up.  A student may stay enrolled in class with 5 absences but at 6 the student must withdraw from class no matter how many make ups have been completed.  This is an activity course with heavy emphasis on participation since one of the objectives is to improve the student’s fitness level.

I would be happy to answer any questions or concerns you have about this class so you
