Whale Watcher
Sea World of
Florida
1 credit
hour 8-12 hours a
week
The Whale Watch internship
is an exciting program. Students learn about the behaviors, training,
communication, attachment and nursing behaviors of Orca’s at Shamu
Stadium. Students are required to be on duty 8 – 12 hours a week-in 4
hour increments; but the scheduling of these hours are flexible. Students
learn observation and data collection skills as well as being given the
opportunity to interact and talk with the trainers at Shamu Stadium. This
is an opportunity that many students enjoy and many return to the program
several times. If you are interested in finding out more about this program,
please contact me!
There are several steps
that have to be completed prior to the whale watch experience. Here is a
quick review of some of those steps. Before you begin killer whale
observations and in order to provide the most beneficial experience possible,
we have to take care of some procedural details.
Pre-requisites
To be eligible for an internship, students must:
- Complete at least 12 Valencia college credits
- Complete preparatory classes in English, reading
and/or math based on CPT/ACT/SAT test scores
- Have a G.P.A. of 2.0 or better
- Complete course pre-requisites for their major
You should complete the
paperwork to participate in the internship program at Valencia. To find out more about the internship at Sea
World, please contact Dr. Debra Hollister of the Psychology Department at (407)
582-2399. Please do not contact anyone at SeaWorld before first registering at
school.
Next, you will report to
the Human Resources Department at SeaWorld Orlando, for mandatory
pre-programming screening, including hair and urine testing. If you are
registered at Valencia, the HR Department at Sea World
will be expecting you during the hours 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM or 1:00 PM –3:30 PM.
For some testing, you will be sent
off-site (but not far from SeaWorld), so you should arrange for reliable
transportation.
Soon thereafter, you will
be notified of your test results. If they are satisfactory, you will be
notified and entered into our badge system. Once you are in the badge system,
you will be able to go to the Employee Services Department (during
regular business hours) to obtain your photo ID card and uniform shirt.
You will then be directed to an orientation session that reviews basic
procedures about Sea World. You will be required to wear your shirt and present
your ID card for every Whale watch shift, beginning with Orientation.
There is another orientation that takes place at Shamu Stadium that will
explain the process at the Shamu Stadium more completely. Both the Human
Resources Dept. and the Employee Services Dept. are located adjacent to SeaWorld
Security Gate 1, off of Sea
Harbor Drive.
