Course Description
(Legal) Freshman Composition I (ENC1101) is a writing course which includes introduction of the essay form and instruction and practice in expository writing. Emphasis is on clarity of central and supporting ideas, adequate development, logical organization, coherence, and grammatical and mechanical accuracy. Each student must write 6,000 words and will earn three (3) credit hours upon satisfactory completion of the course and the departmental exit examination.
(Explanation) This is a writing course, so don't be surprised that you have to write--papers, journals, comments, reflections.  If you don't turn in all the papers you will not meet the 6,000 word requirement.  Students will write often; some of it will be evaluated by the instructor, some will be the basis for interaction with other students--but it will all contribute to better control of writing skills.  We also will be reading and discussing a variety of essays, paying particular attention to their structure--how the authors communicate, rather than what they communicate.  These observations will then be expected to be incorporated into the students' writing.

English Composition 1 (ENC 1101) has been designated as one of Valencia’s courses that must enable students to demonstrate the basic use of computers. This course will therefore require the use of computers for the following learning activities:

Topics for formal written assignments will be posted on the class's Atlas Message Board one week before they are due.  Students' Atlas accounts are accessible through the World Wide Web, and it is the students' responsibility to access the Message Board regularly.

All formal written assignments must be prepared on a computer. No grades will be assigned for hand-written or typed papers.

Students must use the internet to search for sources for the paper requiring the use of MLA citation. No grades will be assigned for papers that do not include at least one internet source.

Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide a letter from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and discuss specific needs with the professor, preferably during the first two weeks of class. The Office for Students with Disabilities determines accommodations based on appropriate documentation of disabilities (Building 1, Room 140, ext. 4167).

Prerequisites
ENC 0012 with a grade of C and passing grade in REA 0002 or scores of 37 on both English and reading components of ASSET or equivalent scores on other state-approved entry test.
