SCOPE:

The development of birth control was one of the greatest medical achievements of the 20th century.  The types of birth control (or contraception) can fit into two broader categories: permanent and nonpermanent.  Permanent methods include vasectomy in men and tubal ligation in women. Nonpermanent methods include oral birth-control pills, hormone implants, hormone injections, and devices placed inside the uterus (womb); barrier methods, such as condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, and sperm-killing products; and "natural" methods, such as not having sexual intercourse when the risk of pregnancy is high.   (Opposing Viewpoints 2004)
