MTV stands for Music Television and yet the only
time they show music is extremely early in the morning when their target
audience is asleep or hung over. TRL is televised in the afternoon as a
top ten music shoot out variety show and hardly qualifies as a source of
good music. The programming on MTV has fallen into a terrible spiral of
stupid pop culture crap dramatically since the days of Liquid
Television, and original shows such as Daria and Beavis and Butthead.

Nowadays, MTV’s focus is not on originality or
musical substance. Greed, Narcissism, and misogynistic reality TV proves
to be a more profitable product to feed to the hungry, naive American
viewers.

TRL is an opportunity for the viewers to vote on music to be
shown. The choices are limited thought, to what is popular at the time
regardless of the messages it promotes. Many of the video shows extreme
forms of greed and degradation of women. The lyrics of these excuses of
songs do not promote anything positive or beneficial to the world. Cars,
money, “bling”, huge mansions, and nearly naked women has become a
standard to which many artists believe they have to reach to have
success with their audiences.

A number of female artists have reached a level of skinny that should
not even exist. The pressures of fame, fortune, and being a super cool
role model has taken its toll and brainwashed these artists and
actresses. The look MTV is promoting to the public is one that only
anorexia, bulimia, or plastic surgery can achieve. Developing teenage
girls and guys do not need to be influenced by such biased trash.

Between clips of terrible music and bold flashy commercials informing
you that under no circumstances can you live without this product,
twitchy TRL news broadcasters blurt out extemporaneous pop culture.

Nothing relevant can come out of a five
minute dialogue about fashion, celebrity spotting and baby names, artists
court appearances, or new car accessories. Watch some real news, world
news, something that does not revolve around one person that TV has put on
an untouchable superstar pedestal. Better yet, read your news.

Reality TV has taken the States by storm and like every other fad MTV
jumped on the bandwagon. Instead of being active and expanding their
horizons many teens as well as adults plop down on their couches and watch
other people, attractive people, rich people, skinny people, have
extravagant lives. The truth is the only reason the reality stars have
“extravagant lives” is because the loyal viewer tune in every week and
watch their perfectly edited existence. Americans are wasting away their
time and health watching other people live, does this sound ridiculous to
anyone else?
